In an industry-first move, Volvo CE announced that it will launch a fully-electric range of compact wheel loaders and compact excavators by mid-2020.
Volvo CE's commitment to furthering technology in the construction industry led to the initial development of the EC15 to EC27 range of electric compact excavators and the L20 to L28 range of electric wheel loaders. Once these machines go to market, Volvo CE will halt new diesel-engine-based productions for these models.
With this move, Volvo CE is the first construction equipment manufacturer to commit to an electric future for its compact machine range. This follows a favorable reaction from the market after Volvo CE worked closely with customers to gauge their needs and successfully unveiled of a number of concept machines in recent years, including the award-winning, fully-electric LX2 and EX2. This launch aligns with the Volvo Group’s strategic focus on electromobility in all business areas.
Volvo CE will unveil the first of these machines at the April 2019 Bauma exhibition, followed by a market-by-market introduction and ramp-up in 2020.
According to Volvo CE, diesel combustion is still the necessary power source for larger machines; however, electric propulsion and battery technology suits smaller equipment well. With research and development investments now focused on the rapid advancement of its electric compact wheel loaders and excavators, Volvo CE is taking a step toward diesel-free compact equipment in the future.
